LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara scored three runs in the first inning against Santa Clara on Saturday morning and never looked back, posting the first win of the season on the second day of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament being hosted by UCLA at Easton Stadium.
The Gauchos improve to 1-2 on the season, after dropping a game to Nevada and one to No. 5 Oklahoma on Friday.
Sophomore Lindsey Correa picked up the win in the circle, improving to 1-1 on the year. Correa threw five innings allowing three earned runs on five hits while walking two and fanning five batters. Junior Tami Weston played in the final two innings, also allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Sophomore Jessica Ziegler had a strong showing at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and a career-best two runs. Senior Tisha Duran, who hit a homerun in each of Friday's games, was once again solid going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Sophomore Christine Ramos got the game rolling with a triple to right field at the top of the first. Ziegler singled to center on the next play, bringing Ramos home for the first Gaucho run of the game. Ziegler stole second before Tiffany Wright and Duran each walked with one out to load the bases. Santa Clara quickly switched pitchers before Jessica Beristianos earned the third straight Gaucho walk, sending Ziegler home. The Bronco pitching staff continued to struggle as a wild pitch allowed Wright to cross home plate and put the Gauchos ahead, 3-0.
Correa retired the next three batters in order and both teams remained scoreless in the second inning.
Wright led off for UCSB in the third and quickly advanced to first after being hit by a pitch. Wright then stole second and advanced to third on a catcher error. A RBI single from Duran sent Wright home for her second run of the game, extending the Gaucho lead to 4-0. A sacrifice bunt from Beristianos advanced Duran to second before Danielle Meyers walked, putting two Gauchos on-base. A triple from Nicole Churnock one play later drove both Duran and Meyers home, giving UCSB a 6-0 lead after two and a half innings of play.
Santa Clara left two runners on in the third before Ziegler led-off the top of the fourth inning with her third single of the game. A sac bunt from Katie McWhirter pushed Ziegler over to second base before Wright earned her second walk of the game. A single from Duran to right field brought Ziegler home for the only Gaucho run of the inning. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, UCSB had a 7-0 advantage.
A lead-off solo homerun from Amanda Edmonson put the Broncos on the board for the first time in the fourth. Correa sandwiched a walk with a pair of strikeouts, but a second Santa Clara homerun, this time from Noelani Ho'opi'i cut the UCSB lead to 7-3.
Weston came in to pitch at the bottom of the fifth and allowed just one run: an RBI single from Edmonson to head into the sixth inning at 7-4.
Both teams remained scoreless in the sixth and the Gauchos added their final run of the game at the top of the seventh when Churnock scored unearned on a McWhirter walk with the bases loaded.
A double from Edmonson brought home a Bronco run with no outs in the seventh and she was brought home on a single from Maggie Godfrey. The Santa Clara comeback would fall short though, as the next two batters went down in order, giving UCSB the 8-6 victory.
The Gauchos finish up action at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament against host No. 14 UCLA this afternoon.
