SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team outhit UC Riverside in the season's final game at Campus Diamond on Sunday afternoon, putting up 11 to the Highlanders' nine. However, a big UCR home run in the sixth would see the visitors on to a 6-2 win.

Junior Devan Sperry led the Gauchos (8-41, 2-16) with three hits on the day, while junior Kayla Krantz tallied two RBIs on two hits.

Playing in her final home game, senior infielder Melanie Menor tallied a pair of hits and one run. Following her single through the right side in the bottom of the sixth, she and sophomore Maci Fines would score on a double to left center by Krantz.

Unfortunately for the Gauchos, they began the sixth down five runs. Nadia Witt had opened the scoring with a two-run double of her own in the top of the second. Emma Ramelot's three-run homer in the sixth put the Highlanders up 5-0. UCR would tack on one more run in the top of the seventh.

Senior Veronika Gulvin got the start in the circle, tossing a pair of strikeouts as she pitched the first six innings. Sammy Fabian, Ally Nodohara and Teah Thies recorded one hit apiece as well.

The 11 hits set a conference season-high for the Gauchos, who put up their highest hit total since registering 10 in their series-opening win over Long Beach State on Apr. 19.

Santa Barbara will play one more series next weekend, closing out its 2019 regular season at Cal Poly. The series begins with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, May 10.
