The Week Ahead

The UC Santa Barbara softball team continues Big West action this weekend with a home series against Hawai'i at Campus Diamond. The first game of the series is set for Friday, Apr. 13 at 3:00 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 14 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The Week in Review
Last weekend, the Gauchos traveled north and took two-out-of-three against a formidable UC Davis team. After dropping the series opener on Saturday 2-0, after giving up just two solo homeruns, UCSB bounced back for a 2-1 win followed by a 4-0 victory in the rubber match to clinch the low-scoring series. Freshman Emily Schuttish turned in a pair of strong pitching performances with two complete games and a total of 10 strikeouts while only allowing nine hits combined in the two games. Alyssa Diaz provided the game-winning RBI single in game two while going 3-for-4 at the plate along with Sammy Fabian in game three.

Rainbows in the Forecast
This weekend the Gauchos return home and welcome the Rainbow Wahine of Hawai'i to Campus Diamond. Last season, Hawai'i took two-out-of-three from UCSB at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and now lead the all-time series 48-24. Since Hawai'i joined the Big West in 2013, however, the Gauchos hold a slight 8-7 edge. UH is coming off a three-game series sweep over Cal Poly and are 6-4 in its last 10 games. Sophomore Callee Heen leads the team offensively with a .384 average to go along with 12 homeruns and 29 RBIs. Dana Thomsen is the Rainbow Wahine's No. 1 starter and she is 11-10 with a 2.95 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched.

By the Numbers
Through 39 games thus far, UCSB is batting .272 (283-for-1,039), good for fourth best in the Big West Conference, while averaging 3.6 runs per game. The Gauchos have 17 homeruns and 71 extra base hits along with a .332 on-base percentage and a .381 slugging percentage. Opponents have scored 5.8 runs per game against UCSB. The Gauchos' pitching staff has a 4.46 ERA as a group, having allowed 165 earned runs in 259.0 innings pitched with 139 strikeouts.

Diaz On a Tear
Sophomore first basemen Alyssa Diaz has been on a tear at the plate since Big West action began and leads all players with a .588 batting average (10-for-17) through six conference games. The South El Monte, Calif. native is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak, her best of the season, and leads UCSB with 12 multi-hit games (10 two-hit games, two three-hit games). Diaz was instrumental in the Gauchos' series win at UC Davis, as she provided the game-winning RBI in game two and went 3-for-4 in the rubber match. Overall, Diaz leads the Gauchos with a .349 average, five homeruns and 19 RBIs.

Schuttish Shuttin' Em Down
Freshman Emily Schuttish (3-3) has made her mark for the Gauchos in the past few weeks and has become a consistent, reliable force for UCSB's staff. After impressive performances early on in her career, Schuttish has seen her work load continue to increase and she has not disappointed. This past weekend at UC Davis, Schuttish allowed just two runs in a gritty pitcher's duel while going the distance and striking out five while scattering five hits in a loss. She bounced right back the very next day and pitched a complete game shutout with another five strikeouts while giving up just four hits. She now leads the team with a 3.02 ERA in 53.1 innings pitched and has struck out 32 batters on the year.

Fabulous Freshmen
Freshmen Sammy FabianAlyssa Lazatin and Rayna Cohen have enjoyed early success in their collegiate careers, as they are three of the top six hitters for the Gauchos, statistically speaking. Fabian is currently second on the team with a .343 average (36-for-105) while Cohen is batting .284 and Lazatin is hitting .266.
