Big West Play Continues
The UC Santa Barbara softball team continues Big West action this weekend with a three-game series at UC Davis (20-12, 2-1). Due to inclement weather the series schedule has been shuffled around and will see the first game take place on Saturday, Apr. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at La Rue Field. The final two games will take place on Sunday, with the doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
UCSB began Big West Conference play last weekend with a three-game series against defending champion Cal State Fullerton on the road. It was the first time the Titans have swept the Gauchos since 2010 after topping UCSB 2-1 in the opener, followed by a 14-6 (6) win and an 8-0 (5) win on ESPN3. Alyssa Diaz led the Gauchos at the plate in the series with a 4-for-8 performance while freshman Alyssa Lazatin hit her first career homerun to leadoff game two.
UC Davis Preview
The Aggies are coming off of a series against CSUN that saw them take two-out-of-three, bouncing back with wins by the score of 6-3 and 8-0 (5) after dropping the opener 4-3. UCSB holds a strong 26-13 advantage in the all-time series, however, UC Davis took two-out-of-three over the Gauchos in 2017. This season, the Aggies are led by freshman Alyse Rojas, batting .410 (43-for-105) with 18 runs scored and 18 RBIs to lead the team. Freshman Brooke Yanez leads UCD in the circle with a 12-4 record to go with a 1.36 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 113.1 innings pitched.
By the Numbers
Through 36 games thus far, UCSB is batting .273 (261-for-957), good for fourth best in the Big West Conference, while averaging 3.7 runs per game. The Gauchos have 17 homeruns and 70 extra base hits along with a .333 on-base percentage and a .390 slugging percentage. Opponents have scored 6.2 runs per game against UCSB. The Gauchos' pitching staff has a 4.74 ERA as a group, having allowed 162 earned runs in 239.0 innings pitched with 127 strikeouts.
Freshmen Sammy Fabian, Alyssa Lazatin and Rayna Cohen have enjoyed early success in their collegiate careers, as they are three of the top five hitters for the Gauchos, statistically speaking. Fabian currently leads the team, and ranks 13th in the Big West, with a .337 (32-for-95) average while Cohen is hitting .316 (25-for-79) with two homeruns. Lazatin, meanwhile, is hitting (24-for-84) with 16 runs batted in.
