SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Early errors plagued UCSB as it dropped its series-opener to UC Davis, 7-0, in the two teams' only game on Friday. Seniors Kristen Clark and Stacy Cavazos led the way with two hits apiece, going 2-4 and 2-3 at the plate, respectively.
The Gauchos (28-24, 8-8) fell behind early, giving up runs in each of the first four innings while totaling four errors. Davis (20-29, 5-11) opened the scoring with a solo homer by junior Ashley Lotoszynski in the top of the first. Senior Alexis Carney would double the Aggies' lead soon after, scoring on a sac fly in the second.
After another Aggie run in the third extended their lead to 3-0, the visitors would have their best inning of the day in the top of the fourth. Davis recorded four hits in the inning, getting each of its first three batters on base.
Sophomore Caroline Figueroa's two-run single would then make it 5-0. After picking up an RBI with a triple to right field, Lotoszynski would make it 7-0, scoring an unearned run with two outs on the board.
UCSB would clean things up over the final three innings, outhitting the Aggies 4-1 while going error-free the rest of the way. Also recording hits on the day for the home side were freshman Alyssa Diaz and seniors Jacqueline Hinojosa and Stacy Cavazos, who all finished 1-3 at the plate.
Santa Barbara will close out its series with Davis tomorrow, with game two set to begin at 1 p.m. Following this, the Gauchos will close out the regular season with their final home series next weekend against Cal State Fullerton (May 12-13).
