ST. GEORGE, Utah – UCSB (9-10) maintained its perfect weekend on the final day of the St. George Red Desert Classic, defeating Nebraska-Omaha (7-11) by a final score of 2-1 after eight innings. Freshman first baseman Alyssa Diaz recorded the only two Gaucho RBIs of the day, with her second coming on a double in the top of the eighth to bring senior left fielder Kristen Clark home for the game-winning run.
Clark's run was UCSB's first since the third inning, when senior right fielder Jacqueline Hinojosa scored off Diaz a single to left field to give the Gauchos a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks' sole run of the day came in the bottom of the fifth, as freshman Emma Dargy tied things up following a double from teammate Hailey Bartz.
Sophomore pitcher Veronika Gulvin (6-4) pitched a full game for the second day in a row, tallying three strikeouts while allowing just four hits and one run.
Of the five Gaucho victories this weekend, four of them came in games decided by two runs or less. UCSB is now 8-2 in such games. The Gauchos' only win of more than two runs came yesterday in a 5-1 victory over Nevada.
Today also marked the third time this season that Santa Barbara has gone to extra inings. The Gauchos are a perfect 3-0 when playing eight innings.
After 21 straight games on the road to open the season, UCSB opens its home schedule with the Gaucho Classic I next weekend. The Classic will begin on Friday, Mar. 10, and end on Monday, Mar. 13.
