SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After splitting Saturday's doubleheader, UCSB (22-25, 5-7) dropped the series rubber match 9-0, as Long Beach State (26-17, 6-6) took the decision in five innings.
Emily Brucelas and Arianna Palomares each had a hit in the game, as Brucelas delivered the biggest shot with a double to left center. For Palomares, she extended her hitting streak to four games with a single.
Ashley Ludlow started the game and was credited with the loss after going for 2.2 innings, while allowing five runs on six hits. Veronika Gulvin and Ashley Wright came in for the final 2.1 frames, as Wright held the 49ers to one hits through her 1.2 innings of work and fanned one batter.
After UCSB's first six batters were unable to reach base, Brucelas ended her team's hitting drought with her seven double of the season. However, Long Beach State pitcher Christina Clermont picked up three consecutive outs and kept Brucelas at second base, preserving the 49ers' five-run lead. The pitcher finished the game going all five innings, tossing nine strikeouts.
In the fourth, Long Beach State added four more runs to its lead with a grand slam, which brought in Wright who ended the scoring with back-to-back outs.
In the final two innings, the Gauchos were unable to avoid the run rule, as Palomares got on with a single but never moved into scoring position.
UCSB will be back next weekend to take on Hawai'i in its final home series of the year. Their first game with the Rainbow Wahine will take place on Friday at 3 p.m., as the teams will play a twin bill on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Tickets for the games are available now at the Ticketing Office in the Intercollegiate Athletics Building, over the phone at 805.893.UCSB (8272), and online.
