SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UCSB's midweek game against Loyola Marymount was a pitcher's duel as both starters pitched complete games for their respective teams. Ashley Ludlow was in the circle for the Gauchos only giving up one walk and one run, while striking out an impressive total of nine batters over seven innings. That punch out tally is the third best for the senior this season, as she recorded 11 in her no-no against Georgia Tech (2/27) and fanned 10 in a 4-1 win over Bethune-Cookman (2/21).
Overall, Ludlow faced just 25 batters though the game and only met at the most four Lions batters in each inning.
The only run of the game came in the top of the second inning from a solo shot into center field from LMU left fielder Amanda Dirks.
Defensively, Santa Barbara only allowed three Loyola Marymount players in scoring position over the course of the game and made big plays in the field such as throwing out an LMU runner attempting to steal home, as well as a relay from Kristen Clark to shortstop Brucelas to Altmeyer at first for a tag out of Stephanie Crist who rounded first base too far after singling to left field.
All six hits for the Gauchos came one at a time in every inning except for the fifth. Four out of those six hits were lead off singles, but UCSB was unable to string anything together to get on the board. Both lefty slappers Kristen Clark and Jacqueline Hinojosa had two hits apiece on the day using their speed to beat out throws on their infield singles.
The Gauchos looked to rally still trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh after Ludlow retired Marymount batters 1-2-3 on strikeouts to begin the inning. Hinojosa lead off with a bunt single to pitcher Hannah Bandimere, but the Lion hurler would pick up her eleventh win of the season after forcing three consecutive ground balls.
UCSB will be back at Campus Diamond this weekend for their Big West opener with rival Cal Poly. The teams will open the series with a twin bill on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., while the finale will be hosted on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. as well. Tickets for all three games are available at the Ticketing Office in the Intercollegiate Athletics Building, over the phone at 805.893.UCSB (8272), or online.
