LAS VEGAS – Despite out-hitting UNLV, UC Santa Barbara could not keep pace with the Rebels who closed out their tournament with a 6-3 win.
The Gauchos move to 6-19 on the season, while UNLV improves to 14-10.
UNLV got a fast start to the game in scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Though the Gauchos recorded two runs through the first four batters, the Rebels rattled off their consecutive scoring at bats, including two doubles.
The Gauchos got on the board with the help of an error by shortstop Garie Blando. Samantha Stark led off with an infield single and was moved into scoring position after a Stacy Cavazos walk. Clark then reached first off the error and Stark beat the throw for the score. Cavazos, though, tried to reach third on the play but was thrown out by the catcher Brooke Stover.
UCSB kept the Rebels scoreless until the fifth, as UNLV had no more than four at bats through four consecutive innings. The Rebels, though, added two more runs with a pair of RBI singles to stretch their lead to 6-1.
Down to their final inning, the Gauchos scored off another Rebel error. Clark singled through the right side and scored after Hinojosa's single to the pitcher turned into a two-run scoring play. Kwyn Cooper hurried her throw over to first and allowed two of UCSB's quickest players to score.
The Gauchos will be back at home this week when they will host a twin bill with Charleston Southern starting at 12 p.m.
