RIVERSIDE, Calif.— With dominant pitching, UC Santa Barbara (32-18, 12-5) cruised to two more victories in its doubleheader against fellow Big West opponent, UC Riverside (22-28, 3-14).
Freshman, Kristen Clark led Santa Barbara with six hits on the day, adding to her record breaking season. Shelby Wisdom had another solid performance on the mound as the junior improved her season record to 20-13.
Santa Barbara used a balanced offensive effort to defeat UC Riverside 4-1 in the first game of their Saturday doubleheader. The Gauchos totaled 13 hits and five batters had at least two hits.
The Highlanders got on the scoreboard with a run in the first inning after the leadoff batter singled, stole second and was singled home.
UCSB would answer right back in the top of the second with Kathryn Pilpil leading off the inning with a single to left field. Lauren Boser was then hit by a pitch, Emily Brucelas walked, and Stacy Cavazos was hit by a pitch to pick up an RBI the hard way and score Pilpil.
With the score knotted up at 1-1, the Gauchos took the lead in the top of the fourth on a single by Kristen Clark, to score Brucelas who doubled in the inning.
UCSB kept up the pace offensively scoring another run in the fifth. MeShalon Moore led off the inning with a single to left field. After Pilpil sacrificed her to second, Boser came up and picked up the RBI with a single to take a 3-1 lead.
Shelby Wisdom belted her sixth home run of the season and put UCSB up for good 4-1.
Wisdom also picked up her 19th victory in the circle for the Gauchos as she went the distance once again, only allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three.
After setting the single season hits record last week, Clark added three more hits in this one giving her 79 for the year. She raised her batting average to .429.
Moore, Pilpil, Cavazos and Brucelas each had two hits at the plate for the Gauchos who have reached double digit hits in their last four games.
Unlike the first matchup, the Gauchos never faced a deficit in the second game, allowing zero runs against Riverside.
In a two out situation at the top of the third inning, Kathryn Pilpil delivered the first run of the game with a single to left field to score in Arianna Palomares.
The top of the fifth inning is where the Gauchos did the most damage, adding two more runs on the scoreboard. Walking Arianna Palomares, Wisdom singled to first base to safely place herself and Palomares on first and second. With two outs and bases loader, Lauren Boser drove in two more runs with her single to center field.
To go along with her solid day at the play, Wisdom collected two complete games as the junior pitcher collected three strikeouts with only one earned run for the day. Clark added six hits on the day to make her single season hits total to 82. The freshman ultimately raised her batting average to .436.
UCSB will battle Riverside once more as the two teams will face off one last time tomorrow, Sunday, May 4 at noon.
