RENO, Nev. – In their first game of the Nevada Classic, UC Santa Barbara (12-5) took it to the host Wolf Pack (10-8), winning by a final score of 6-2. The win is the Gauchos second against Nevada in the last two weeks.
Leading the way per usual was Shelby Wisdom, going the full seven innings for the complete game. Wisdom finished with an extraordinary 9 strikeouts, 3 of which retired the side in the second inning. The Wolf Pack scattered 7 hits against Wisdom, plating 2 runs.
UCSB got to work early from the very first pitch, scoring 3 runs before the top of the first was over. After a pair of walks to start, MeShalon Moore singled to right field and an error by the outfielder allowed Kristen Clark to score. Then, with two outs, Lauren Boser hit a clutch knock up the middle, driving in a pair of runs.
In the second, the Gauchos took advantage of two errors by Nevada to score a run. Jenessa Jeppesen reached on an error by the first baseman, and on Stacy Cavazos' ensuing sacrifice bunt, the catcher made an errant throw to first, allowing Jeppesen to scoot to third. Clark's fielder's choice drove in the run.
After the Wolf Pack cracked the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second, UCSB responded with 2 more runs in the third. The first two batters were both hit by pitches, allowing Boser the opportunity to sacrifice them into scoring position. Emily Brucelas then singled to drive in a run, and Jeppesen hit a sac fly to score the second.
The 6 runs were more than enough for Wisdom go the rest of the way for the victory. After allowing 1 run in the fourth, Nevada threatened in the bottom of the fifth with a single and a double, but Wisdom struck out Jasmine Jenkins to end the frame. The Wolf Pack were unable to put a base runner on in either of the final two innings.
The Gauchos continue play in Reno with two games tomorrow, one against Seattle at 10:00 am and another against Nevada at 3:00 pm, both Pacific Standard Time.
