• Season Finale
Last weekend, the UCSB softball team wrapped up their 2013 road schedule with a visit to the University of Hawai'i. In the first game, the Gauchos played the Rainbow Wahine to nine innings before Sami Stark hit the game winning home run to give UCSB the 4-1 victory. Hawai'i won the series by taking both games of the doubleheader the following day.
• For The Record
UCSB enters this weekend with a 29-23 record and are tied with Cal State Northridge for fifth place in the Big West with a 10-11 conference mark.
• Handling the Highlanders
UC Riverside owns the worst conference record in the Big West at 3-18. Two of those wins came in their series victory over Cal Poly two weeks ago. Kayla White is the Highlanders' star player and leads the team in batting average (.371), slugging percentage (.667), and home runs (11). Alyssa Razo (9-14) leads UCR in the circle with a team-low 4.51 ERA.
• Just Keep Swinging
UCSB ranks among the top-five teams in the conference in nearly every major offensive category. They are fourth in the Big West in team batting average (.268), third in slugging percentage (.381), fifth in on-base percentage (.335) and fourth in hits (362). In terms of scoring, the Gauchos have the fourth most runs scored in the conference with 186 and are fourth in runs batted in with 169.
• Slammin' Sami
Sami Stark came through in the clutch in UCSB's first game against Hawai'i on May 3rd. The freshman, who was previously 0-3 on the night, took her final at-bat in the top of the ninth with runners on first and second and two outs. She broke the 1-1 tie with the game winning home run crushed to right center. It was her first game winning hit as a Gaucho and her second career homer.
• Home Run Queen
On May 4th, Keilani Jennings clubbed two homers in Hawai'i to become UCSB's all-time home runs leader with 31 career jacks. The senior was previously on a 16-game streak without a moon shot. The performance also was her first multi-home run game since Feb. 16th. She passed Tiffany Wright (30) that night and will have three more games this weekend to add on to her record.
• Bose Knows Hits
Lauren Boser has been quietly leading the Gauchos in batting average during Big West play. She currently leads the club with a .309 batting average against conference opponents. The junior is also second to Shelby Wisdom in conference slugging percentage with a .527 mark.
• History Lesson
Jessica Soria has worked her way into the Gaucho record book with her 47 career stolen bases, which currently rank fifth all-time. Last year, she picked up 25 steals which was the sixth most by a Gaucho in a single season. She is currently three shy of that mark this season.
• In the Circle
Shelby Wisdom has been the Gauchos go-to pitcher this season and has racked up the third-most wins in the Big West with 16. Opposing teams only have a .259 batting average against her, seventh lowest among Big West pitchers. She is also fifth in the conference with 127 strikeouts through 180.1 innings of work. Of those punch outs, 35 of them have caught the batter looking, which is the fifth most in the Big West.
• Dual Threat
In addition to being the Gauchos' top pitcher, Shelby Wisdom has also been contributing with her play at the plate. She currently is fourth on the Gauchos with a .306 batting average and is second in the Big West for RBIs with 39. The sophomore leads the team with 13 doubles (second in conference) and is also second on the Gauchos with 47 hits. She owns the team's highest slugging percentage at .548 (tenth in the conference). Wisdom has garnered the most total bases on the team with 86, which places her in seventh place in the Big West.
• Sensational Soria
As a senior, Jessica Soria has led UCSB by being one of the most productive leadoff batters in the Big West. She leads the Gauchos in both hits (59), good for third in the conference, and batting average (.328), ninth in the Big West. Soria is sixth in the Big West with 36 runs scored, and has the second-most stolen bases in the conference with 22 swipes in 27 attempts.
• Take a Pilpil
Second baseman Kathryn Pilpil has found herself hitting at the top of the lineup lately, and the move has worked out.. She has been consistent for the team in getting on base as she leads the team with both a .407 on-base percentage (eighth in the Big West) and 25 walks (fifth in conference). She also has reached base by hit-by-pitch five times, which leads the squad.
• The Galicinao File
Head coach Brie Galicinao, who is now in her sixth season at the helm of the UCSB softball program, has coached the Gauchos to a 128-140 cumulative record for a .478 winning percentage, the second best since the softball program went Division I in 1982. Galicinao has coached three players to All-Region honors, two players to Big West Field Player of the Year accolades, two Big West Freshmen Pitchers of the Year and 27 All-Big West Conference selections. Last season, she was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the second time; she was named Co-Coach of the Year in 2008, her first season at the helm of the program.
