• On the Road Again
Last weekend, the UCSB softball team won their home series versus Cal State Northridge. The Gauchos mercy-ruled the Matadors 8-0 as Shelby Wisdom led the way with a two-hit shutout and a 1-3 performance at the plate that included a three RBI double. In the Sunday rubber match, UCSB clinched the series win thanks to Lauren Boser's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that gave her team the 6-5 edge.
• For The Record
UCSB enters this weekend with a 28-21 record and are in sole possession of fourth place in conference with a 9-9 Big West mark.
• Aloha Hawai'i
The University of Hawai'i has made a grand re-entrance into the Big West Conference as they currently sit atop the conference rankings with a 38-20 record and a 15-3 mark in conference. They are coming off their first home series loss of the season at the hands of Long Beach State. who now sit in second place in the conference. The Rainbow Wahine are led by Kelly Majam who has clubbed a league-high 17 home runs. In the circle, Kaia Parnaby has a 1.30 ERA and owns the best record in the Big West of 34-4.
• Just Keep Swinging
UCSB ranks among the top-five teams in the conference in nearly every major offensive category. They are fifth in the Big West in team batting average (.266), third in slugging percentage (.376), fourth in on-base percentage (.335) and fourth in hits (336). In terms of scoring, the Gauchos have the fourth most runs scored in the conference with 173 and fifth in runs batted in with 150.
• Bose Knows Clutch
First baseman Lauren Boser had one of her best games of the season on Apr. 28 versus Cal State Northridge. In the series deciding game, Boser went 3-3 at the plate and came up just a single short of the cycle. The junior even delivered the biggest hit of the day with a game winning home run in the bottom of the sixth to regain the 6-5 for the Gauchos after the team blew a 5-0 lead.
She also leads the Gauchos with a .311 batting average in conference play.
• In the Circle
Shelby Wisdom has been the Gauchos go-to pitcher this season and has racked up the fourthmost wins in the Big West with 15. Opposing teams only have a .255 batting average against her, sixth lowest among Big West pitchers. She is also fifth in the conference with 119 strikeouts through 164.1 innings of work. Of those punch outs, 32 of them have caught the batter looking, which is the fifth most in the Big West.
• Take a Pilpil
Second baseman Kathryn Pilpil has found herself hitting at the top of the lineup lately, and the move has worked out.. She has been consistent for the team in getting on base as she leads the team with both a .420 on-base percentage (eighth in the Big West) and 25 walks (fourth in conference). She also has reached base by hit-by-pitch five times, which leads the squad.
• Dual Threat
In addition to being the Gauchos' top pitcher, Shelby Wisdom has also been contributing with her play at the plate. She currently is second on the Gauchos with a .315 batting average and is second in the Big West for RBIs with 39. The sophomore leads the team with 12 doubles (third in conference) and is also second on the Gauchos with 47 hits. She owns the team's highest slugging percentage at .564 (seventh in the conference). Wisdom has garnered the most bases on the team with 84, which places her in sixth place in the Big West.
• Sensational Soria
As a senior, Jessica Soria has led UCSB by being one of the most productive leadoff batters in the Big West. She leads the Gauchos with 55 hits, good for third in the conference. Soria is fifth in the Big West with 35 runs scored, and has the second-most stolen bases in the conference with 22 swipes in 27 attempts.
• Gaucho Slugger
Gaucho senior Keilani Jennings sports one of the biggest swings in the UCSB lineup. UCSB's starting shortstop is pacing the club with seven home runs and is second on the team with a 11 doubles (fourth in the Big West). Her 29 RBIs and .504 slugging percentage are both second on UCSB to Wisdom. Jennings' power has earned her the respect of opposing pitchers as she has been walked 23 times, tied for sixth most in the Big West.
• History Lesson
Jennings has been a consistent source for power hitting since she started playing with the Gauchos. Now, the senior is just two home runs shy of breaking the all-time home runs record at UCSB. She currently has 29 career dingers and only trails Tiffany Wright (30) on the list. She delivered her last home run on Mar. 30th when she hit the game winning two-run shot in the top of the tenth inning to down the Pacific in Stockton 5-3. Soria has worked her way into the Gaucho record book with her 47 stolen bases, which currently rank fifth all-time. Last year, she picked up 25 steals which was the sixth most by a Gaucho in a single season. She is currently three shy of that mark this season.
• The Galicinao File
Head coach Brie Galicinao, who is now in her sixth season at the helm of the UCSB softball program, has coached the Gauchos to a 128-140 cumulative record for a .478 winning percentage, the second best since the softball program went Division I in 1982. Galicinao has coached three players to All-Region honors, two players to Big West Field Player of the Year accolades, two Big West Freshmen Pitchers of the Year and 27 All-Big West Conference selections. Last season, she was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the second time; she was named Co-Coach of the Year in 2008, her first season at the helm of the program.
