• On the Road Again
Last week, the UCSB softball team swept their double header at San Luis Obispo and took two of three from UC Davis at Campus Diamond. The victories clinched UCSB its first two Big West series victories this season.
• For The Record
UCSB enters this weekend with a 25-16 record and are in sole possession of fourth place in conference with a 6-5 Big West mark.
• Blue-Green Rivalry Update
The Gauchos started their week by sweeping their doubleheader at Cal Poly. UCSB took the first game 3-1 and went on to shut out the Mustangs 1-0 to secure the series victory. It was the first time UCSB blanked Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo since Feb. 3, 1993 when the Gauchos topped the Mustangs 3-0 in their season opener. UCSB is now on an eight-game win streak against their rival. The teams will conlcude their three-game series on Wednesday Apr. 17 in San Luis Obispo.
• Focusing on the 49ers
Long Beach State captured the Big West Title last season, while UCSB finished just one game behind them. The 49ers are currently in third place in the Big West and are coming off a 1-2 series loss at Pacific. LBSU is the top hitting team in the conference and are led by Hannah De Gaetano and her conference-best .376 batting average.
• Batter Up!
UCSB ranks fifth in the Big West in team batting average (.263), third in slugging percentage (.373) and tied for fourth in hits (278). Long Beach State ranks number one in both batting average (.290) and hits (350), while Hawaii has the top slugging percentage in the conference at .505.
• No Runs For You!
Freshman Alex Pingree is coming off her best week in a Gaucho uniform. She tossed three consecutive shutouts and earned her first Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for doing so. The pitcher now paces the club with both a 1.72 ERA (third in the Big West) and a .249 opposing batting average (seventh in the Big West). Her team leading 33 runs allowed and 22 earned runs allowed rank her fourth and third respectively in the conference.
• Phenomenal Freshman
While only a freshman, Arianna Palomares has made an immediate impact at UCSB by becoming the team's top hitter. She paces the team with a .323 batting average, and is second on the team with 41 hits. She has also hit nine doubles this season, which ties her with teammate Shelby Wisdom for fifth place in the Big West.
• In the Circle
Shelby Wisdom has been the Gauchos go-to pitcher this season and has racked up the third most wins in the Big West with 13. Opposing teams only have a .259 batting average against her, tenth best among Big West pitchers. She is also fifth in the conference with 103 strikeouts through 133 innings of work. Of those punch outs, 29 of them have caught the batter looking, which is the fifth most in the Big West.
• Dual Threat
In addition to being the Gauchos' top pitcher, Shelby Wisdom has also been contributing with her play at the plate. She currently leads the Gauchos and is third in the Big West for RBIs with 33. The sophomore is also third on the Gauchos with 39 hits. She also owns the team's highest slugging percentage at .565 (seventh in the conference). Wisdom has garnered the most bases on the team with 70, which places her in a tie for seventh place in the Big West.
• Sensational Soria
As a senior, Jessica Soria has led UCSB by being one of the most productive leadoff batters in the Big West. She leads the Gauchos with 44 hits, good for fourth in the conference. Soria is tied for second in the Big West with 30 runs scored, and has the second-most stolen bases in the conference with 20 off 22 attempts.
• Gaucho Slugger
Gaucho senior Keilani Jennings sports the biggest bat on the UCSB lineup. UCSB's starting shortstop leads the team with a 10 doubles (fourth in the Big West) and seven homeruns. Her 27 RBIs also rank eighth in the Big West. Her .559 slugging percentage is second on UCSB only to Shelby Wisdom and is ninth overall in the conference. Jennings' power has earned her the respect of opposing pitchers as she has been walked 22 times, tied for fourth most in the Big West alongside her teammate Kathryn Pilpil.
• The Galicinao File
Head coach Brie Galicinao, who is now in her sixth season at the helm of the UCSB softball program, has coached the Gauchos to a 128-140 cumulative record for a .478 winning percentage, the second best since the softball program went Division I in 1982. Galicinao has coached three players to All-Region honors, two players to Big West Field Player of the Year accolades, two Big West Freshmen Pitchers of the Year and 27 All-Big West Conference selections. Last season, she was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the second time; she was named Co-Coach of the Year in 2008, her first season at the helm of the program.
