MONROE, La. - The fourth and final day of the Mardi Gras Classic, which was being hosted this weekend by Louisiana Monroe, has been cacelled due to rain, including UC Santa Barbara's contest with Southeast Missouri State.
The Gauchos won the tournament after finishing 5-0, marking their best start to a season since they went 6-0 to start the 2011 campaign.
Sophomore Shelby Wisdom was named the tournament's MVP. She drove in seven on seven hits, including a home run. She was also masterful in the circle, posting a 3-0 record. She struck out 20 batters and did not surrender a run on 11 hits in 17.1 innings pitched.
UCSB will open its 2013 home campaign this week as it hosts the Gaucho Classic I at Campus Diamond. The tournament will run Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17. The Gauchos will open tournament play against Missouri on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
