• This Week in Gaucho Softball
The UCSB softball team will return to Campus Diamond after a two week road swing that included travel to exotic locations such as Hawai'i and San Jose. This weekend, the Gauchos will host the Gaucho Classic II, a three-day tournament that will welcome Wisconsin, Oklahoma State and San Jose State to Campus Diamond, one of the hidden jewels of Santa Barbara.
• Home Cookin'
The Gauchos have posted a 5-1 record on their home diamond this season. All of their home contests so far this season took place during the four-day Gaucho Classic I in late February. UCSB posted its longest win streak of the season – five straight – to open tourney play before falling to San Diego in the closing game.
• Taking On The Best
This weekend will mark just the second weekend this season that UCSB will not be facing any ranked opposition. Of the Gauchos' 27 games thus far, 10 have been played against teams ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball and NFCA Top-25 polls and another three games were against teams receiving votes. UCSB has posted a 2-8 record against ranked opposition. Oklahoma State, which played in the 2011 Women's College World Series, is currently listed among teams receiving votes in the latest NFCA poll.
• For The Record
UCSB carries a 10-17 record into this weekend's tournament after going 3-2 at the Santa Clara Bronco Classic last week. The Gauchos won a pair of games against St. Mary's, split a pair against Santa Clara and dropped one to San Jose State.
• A. Tay Came To Play
The Northern California air must have agreed with senior Allison Taylor, who had a standout weekend at the plate. She batted .500 (7-for-14) over the weekend with a team-leading six RBI and nine total bases. She also posted a pair of runs and a pair of doubles. Taylor had at least one hit in every game. Prior to the weekend, she had recorded just one hit across her previous 18 at-bats.
• Mack Attack
Sophomore McKenzie Kane, who bats second in the lineup, was the benefactor of much of Taylor's clutch hitting in the No. 3 spot. The outfielder scored a team-best six runs across last week's five games and also led the team with eight hits. She was also 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. Kane posted a career-high-tying three hits in the victory over Santa Clara on Saturday. She now leads the team in batting (.328) – which ranks 10th in the Big West – and runs (11).
• The Lo Down on Boser
Sophomore Lauren Boser appeared in three games over the weekend and notched a hit in each. In the nine-inning victory over St. Mary's on Sunday, she tied her career-high with three hits, one of which was an RBI double. She is second on the squad in doubles (4) this season.
• Sweet 16
The Gauchos tallied a season-best 16 hits in the nine-inning battle with St. Mary's on Sunday. The total is two more than their prior best of 14, which they tallied against Nevada (Feb. 26). It marked the most hits by the squad since its Feb. 13, 2011 win over Seattle University.
• Shelby's Strikeouts
Freshman pitcher Shelby Wisdom brought her season strikeout total to 95 last weekend, as she threw 29 K's across 20.2 innings. The Elk Grove, Calif. native ranks second in the Big West in strikeouts and 24th nationally among all Division I pitchers. She has also already surpassed the team strikeout leaders from the past two seasons; Andriana Collins had a team-leading 89 in 2011 and Krista Cobb had 67 in 2010. Wisdom has posted a 6-8 record this season across 21 appearances. She owns a 3.96 ERA, which is seventh in the Big West, and a .267 opponent batting average, which ranks sixth.
• Turning Up the AC
Collins has split the time in the circle with Wisdom and has recorded a 4-9 record thus far with a 4.61 ERA. She has tallied 50 strikeouts, which ranks eighth in the conference. She is sixth in the Big West in innings pitched (82).
• Speedy Soria
Junior Jessica Soria continues to lead UCSB in hits (27) and stolen bases (9), which ranks third among conference players. She is second on the team in batting with her .307 average.
• The Galicinao File
Now in her fifth season at the helm of the UCSB softball program, head coach Brie Galicinao has coached the Gauchos to a 108-129 record for a .456 winning percentage, the second best since the softball program went Division I in 1982.
