• The Gaucho Record
UC Santa Barbara will take a 3-1 record into the Minnesota Gold Classic in Minneapolis. On Aug. 27, the Gauchos completed a three-game season-opening homestand with a resounding 5-1 win over visiting Saint Joseph's. On Sunday, Aug. 29, they played their first road game of the season and lost a 4-1 decision to the University of San Francisco.

• First 3-0 Start In Quite A While With its 5-1 win over Saint Joseph's on Friday, UCSB improved to a perfect 3-0 on the young season. It was the first time since 1993 that the Gauchos started a season with a 3-0 record. That year, they opened the campaign with a 5-0 mark.

• Coaches Pick Gauchos To Win Title
In a poll of the league's coaches, UCSB was picked to win the 2010 Big West championship. The Gauchos, who have won the last two league tournaments and advanced to the last two NCAA Tournaments, received four first-place votes and 75 total points. Cal Poly, whom Santa Barbara has knocked out of each of the last two Big West Tournaments, was picked second with two first-place votes and 61 points.

• Lofty Goals
The five goals the Gauchos scored in their 5-1 victory over Saint Joseph's on Aug. 27 were the most goals that the team had scored since it tallied eight in an 8-0 win over the University of Idaho on Oct. 31, 2003. In 2009, UCSB scored a season-high four goals in a 4-1 win at UC Davis, but it scored more than two goals on just three occasions all season. On the flipside, the four goals that San Francisco scored on Sunday were the most scored by a Gaucho opponent since UCLA went for five on Sept. 28, 2005.

• Ortega Gets Hot In A Hurry
Sophomore midfielder Erin Ortega needed a span of just five minutes and 32 seconds near the end of the first half of Friday's 5-1 win over Saint Joseph's to equal her goal scoring output of the entire 2009 season. With the score tied 1-1, Ortega scored a goal at the 35:27 mark to break the tie. At 40:59, she made the score 3-1 with her second goal of the match and season. She came into the match with an assist and now has five points. In 2009, Ortega played in 21 of 22 games and produced two goals and one assist for five points.

• Gaucho Notes
Makenna Henry became the first freshman to start in goal for UCSB since Mary Gleason did so in 1998...Senior Erica Seidman came into the season with one career goal and has already scored three in 2010...The Gauchos have 12 assists on their 10 goals...UCSB is averaging 15.75 shots per match and allowing 5.0 per contest...The Gauchos have 31 shots on goal and have allowed 10.

• On The Stumpf
Paul Stumpf is in his 12th season as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara. He has a record of 111-87-27. His 111 wins are the most in school history. On Sept. 9, 2009 he became the school's all-time leader in coaching with as the Gauchos defeated William and Mary, 2-0. In 2009, Stumpf guided UCSB to its second straight Big West Tournament title, and second NCAA Tournament. Prior to 2008, the Gauchos had not been to the tourney since 1991. 2008 also marked the fifth time that Stumpf has guided the Gauchos to at least 10 wins. He has led the program to records of .500 or better in seven of the last 10 seasons, including, at one point, four straight seasons of 10 or more victories, the first time the program had accomplished that feat since 1988-91. In 1999, Stumpf's first season as the head coach at UCSB, he took a team that was picked to finish last in the conference, and instead posted an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the Big West. Following the season, he was chosen as the Big West's Coach of the Year. On two occasions, Stumpf's UCSB teams have won the Big West regular season title.
