Aug. 12, 2010

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The two-time defending Big West Tournament champion UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team has been selected to win the 2010 Big West regular season championship in a poll of the league's coaches it was announced Thursday.

The Gauchos, who have advanced to the last two NCAA Tournaments, received four first-place votes and 75 total points in the poll. Cal Poly, which won the 2009 regular season title before losing on penalty kicks to UCSB in the Big West Tournament championship game, was picked second with two first-place votes and 61 total points. UC Irvine also received two first-place votes and collected 60 points while Pacific garnered one first-place tally and 58 points to check in at third and fourth respectively.

"We have nine seniors and nine juniors who have been part of two Big West Tournament championship teams and two NCAA teams," said Gaucho head coach Paul Stumpf. "On top of that, we have a talented group of freshmen, four or five of which will play significant minutes. For those reasons I am optimistic."

Santa Barbara returns eight regular starters, including 2009 Big West Offensive Player of the Year Kailyn Kugler and two other First Team All-Big West honorees in Jacqui Simon and Kylie McDonald. Defender Nicole Romanowski (Second Team All-Big West) and midfielder Erin Ortega (Honorable Mention All-Big West) are also among the returnees.

UCSB will open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7:00 pm when it hosts Cal State Northridge in a non-conference game at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The Gauchos will also host Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 5:00 pm.
