SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UCSB women's soccer team was selected to win the 2009 Big West regular season championship in a vote of the nine coaches as the league's annual preseason poll was released Tuesday.
The Gauchos claimed five first-place votes and 75 points to capture the favorite's role. Eight starters and 21 letterwinners return from the 2008 squad that garnered a 12-7-3 overall record and participated in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991. The Gauchos won two Big West Tournament games on penalty kicks to claim the title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA's.
UCSB welcomes back senior Genelle Ives, the 2008 Big West Offensive Player of the Year. The forward ranked second in the Big West with 25 points on nine goals and seven assists. In addition to Ives, the Gauchos return another all-conference first team performer in junior Jacqui Simon. She placed sixth in the Big West in points (20), recording six goals and eight assists. Second team All-Big West standout Kylie McDonald also bolsters the list of Gaucho returnees.
Three-time defending Big West regular season champion Long Beach State accumulated 67 points for second place while Cal Poly earned 65 points and one first-place nod to finish third in the preseason poll. Pacific garnered the final first-place vote and had 53 points to finish fourth.
The Gauchos will debut on Thursday, Aug. 20 when they host Westmont College in an exhibition game that starts at 7:00 p.m. at Meredith Field in Harder Stadium. The team will open the regular season at Santa Clara on Sunday, Aug. 23.
