SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 2007 UC Santa Barbara women's soccer schedule will include seven games against teams that advanced to the 2006 NCAA Tournament, head coach Paul Stumpf has announced. The Gauchos will open the year with consecutive home games against postseason qualifiers Loyola Marymount and USC.
UCSB will kickoff the 2007 season on Aug. 31 at Harder Stadium against LMU and just two days later, on Sept. 2, the Gauchos will host USC. Santa Barbara will, in fact, start the year by playing five of six games against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Following the pair of home games to open the season, UCSB will travel to the upper Midwest for matches on Sept. 7 and Sept. 9 at Wisconsin and UW-Milwaukee, respectively. UWM was a tournament team in 2007.
Following their trip to Wisconsin, the Gauchos return home for two more against postseason teams, hosting Denver on Sept. 14 and UNLV on Sept. 16. After a trip to Cal State Bakersfield on Sept. 20, UCSB returns to host San Diego State and its first-year head coach Michael Friesen on Sept. 23. Friesen is a former assistant to Stumpf. Santa Barbara will complete its September schedule with matches at Washington State and Gonzaga on Sept. 28 and Sept. 30.
The beginning of October will also mark the beginning of the Big West season. The Gauchos open the league campaign on Oct. 5 at home against another NCAA Tournament team, Cal State Fullerton, two-time defending league champion. UC Riverside, which advanced to the postseason in 2005, will be the second league opponent on Oct. 7.
UCSB's final two non-conference games will be played in October, during the league schedule. On Oct. 11, it will host Pepperdine, also a 2005 NCAA Tournament team, and on Oct. 17, the Gauchos will travel to Santa Clara to play the Broncos, a No. 1 seed in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
"The difficult nature of our non-conference games will go a long way towards preparing us for our conference schedule," said Gaucho head coach Paul Stumpf. "The schedule is littered with playoff teams, highly ranked teams and games against some of the best conferences in the nation. I think that's exciting."
In all, UCSB will play games against opponents from the Pac Ten, Big Ten, West Coast Conference and the Mountain West Conference, among others.
The Big West Tournament will be held on Friday and Sunday, Nov. 9 and Nov. 11, at the home facility of the Big West's regular season champion.
