Kai Edwards Joins UCSB Women's Soccer Coaching Staff

March 23, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Kai Edwards, an assistant coach at Sonoma State in 2006, has joined the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer coaching staff, head coach Paul Stumpf announced Friday.

"I am very pleased that Kai Edwards is joining our staff," Stumpf said. "I think he is a great fit for this program. In his last two jobs, he proved to be an outstanding recruiter and evaluator of talent and he loves to recruit, that's important. Also, I feel he will be a good balance for me. I was a central defender and Kai was a forward. He has a great understanding of organizing an attack and the shooting and finishing aspect of the game."

Edwards helped guide Sonoma State to a 12-6-3 record and a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament in 2006. Prior to his one season as an assistant for the Seawolves, Edwards spent two years as an assistant coach at Western Washington. He has also been involved as a coach with the Region IV Olympic Development Program and he has his USSF "A" license and also his NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma.

"I'm really excited for the opportunity to work with a program that has consistently contended for league championships," Edwards said. "I've met the players and I am excited to help them take it to the next level. I am also looking forward to working with Paul Stumpf. He is a quality individual and a great coach and this should be a great opportunity."

Edwards, a graduate of Sonoma State, played two seasons for the Seawolves. As a senior in 2003, he scored five goals and four assists. In 2002, he was a member of Sonoma State's NCAA Division III Championship team. Prior to his two years at Sonoma, Edwards spent two years at San Francisco State where he was a team captain. As a high school player at Rolling Hills Prep in San Pedro, Calif., he was a First Team All-State choice, once scored 11 goals in a single match and still holds record for goals in a game, season and career. Professionally, he played for the Seattle Sounders Select team.

Edwards replaces Charles "Chugger" Adair, who left UCSB in August to take an assistant coaching position at Virginia Tech.
