UCSB Edges Cal Poly in Shootout , Advances to Sunday's Big West Championship Game at Long Beach State
Nov. 6, 2008
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On Thursday night, in a semifinal game of the Big West Women's Soccer Tournament, UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly went to a shootout after playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and a pair of overtimes. Each team made its first four penalty kicks, but after the Mustangs missed their fifth attempt, the Gauchos made theirs, winning 5-4 and advancing to the Sunday's Big West Championship game at Long Beach State.
There was nothing close to a miss or a block in the first four attempts. For Cal Poly, shots by Whitney Sisler, Kaleena Andruss, McKenzie Orand, and Leah Morales each eluded UCSB goalkeeper Ali Cutler. For the Gauchos, Kailyn Kugler, Jacqui Simon, Erica Seidman, and Cory Yoshida each beat Cal Poly's Coral Hoover.
The Mustangs' fifth shot was attempted by Ashley Vallis. Vallis attempted to put the ball into the right side of the goal. Cutler went to her left, but Vallis's shot deflected off the goalpost, setting the stage for UCSB's Sarah Stoltz to be the hero and the sophomore from Ojai, Calif., did not disappoint, lining a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal, beyond the reach of Hoover.
UCSB jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 30:14 when freshman forward Alissa Sanchez hit a long cross to the far post. Her pass eluded a defender and found junior forward Genelle Ives who headed it into the upper-center of the goal. It was the ninth score of the year for Ives.
The Mustangs tied the score at 65:53 when Carissa Voegele hit a strong corner kic to Carrie Andrews. Andrews settled the ball and fired it in from 10 yards out.
In the match, UCSB outshot Cal Poly 30-10, but many of their 12 shots on goal were fired right at Hoover, who finished with 11 saves. Cutler had two saves and the team was credited with one, a game-saver in the 64th minute by freshman Katy Roby.
The shootout was the Gauchos' first in 23 years. The last time they were involved in a postseason shootout of any kind was when they needed one to defeat Cal State Hayward in a 1985 NCAA Tournament match.
The result officially goes down as a tie. Santa Barbara is now 12-6-2, while Cal Poly is 10-9-1. The Gauchos, however, advance to the Big West Championship match on Sunday at Long Beach State. The contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. It will mark the first time since 2004 that the Gauchos have played in the league's title match.
