STOCKTON, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior goalkeeper Tammy Lenham recorded a career-high 12 saves on Sunday afternoon, and the visiting Gauchos needed every one of them in a 0-0 Big West Conference tie at Pacific.
While the tie extended UCSB's conference unbeaten streak to six straight games, it also meant that they remain in second-place. The Gauchos, who are now 8-8-2 overall and 5-1-1 in league play, have 16 points in the conference standings, second to Cal Poly, which is 6-1-0 with 18 points. Pacific is now 9-5-3 overall and 3-2-1 in Big West action.
After scoring a season-high four goals in a 4-1 win at UC Davis on Friday, Santa Barbara struggled to generate any offense against a Tiger team that was battling for its postseason tournament life. UCSB finished with just eight shots, four of which were on goal. Pacific, on the other hand, peppered the Gauchos' with 21 shots, including 12 on-frame. Lenham, however, was up to the challenge as she turned back all 12.
Only one Gaucho player had more than one shot. Genelle Ives had three, all of which were on goal. The Tigers were paced by Laura Hogan who had five shot overall, but only one on goal. Laura Hernandez came off the bench to take four shots, all on-frame.
Jill Medigovich had four saves to record the save for Pacific.
For the first time in a while, a Gaucho opponent actually had more corner kicks. The Tigers finished with seven to UCSB's six.
The Gauchos will return home to host Cal Poly at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1. The game against the Mustangs will be for the Big West's regular season title. A win by either team will give the other the No. 1 seed in the Big West's postseason tournament. A tie would result in a No. 1 seed for the Mustangs.
