SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior goalkeeper Katie Wright played one of her finest matches of the 2007 season on Wednesday night as the visiting UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team battled ninth-ranked Santa Clara University to a scoreless tie at Santa Clara's Buck Shaw Stadium.
Wright posted saves on all six of Santa Clara's shots on goal and she received a little help in the second overtime as a shot by Bronco forward Katherine Reynolds in the 108th minute hit the goal post, keeping the game scoreless. SCU finished with 16 shots to the Gauchos' nine, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half and overtime. UCSB had three shots on goal, one each by Romy Barber, Katrina Wright and Kate Mogannam, but all three were blocked by Bronco goalkeeper Meagan McCray.
For Katie Wright, it was her fourth shutout of the season and the six saves were her second highest total of 2007.
The tie ends a brief two-match losing streak for Santa Barbara, which is now 5-7-3 overall. Santa Clara, which defeated Cal State Fullerton in overtime last week, is now 8-3-3 on the year.
The Gauchos return to Big West play on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host Cal Poly in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium. A pre-game ceremony will be held to salute seven players who are wrapping up their UCSB careers this season.
