SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Riverside senior forward Vanessa Chanez scored in the 14th-minute and the Highlanders held on for a 1-0 Big West win at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night.

The scoring play began when a UCSB defender was attempting to switch the ball from left to right, across the penalty box. Santa Barbara defender Katie Dwyer attempted to get a head on the cross, clearing it out of the zone, however the ball went up in the air in front of the UCSB goalkeeper. Senior goalkeeper came off her line to punch the errant ball out of her box, but again the ball wound up going straight in the air. Chanez then stepped-in to head it over Considine.

The UCSB and UCR defenses did the rest. The Gauchos had several outstanding scoring opportunities, particularly off of corner kicks, but they couldn't finish. UCSB actually outshot the Highlanders 10-6. Considine had five saves while Riverside's Tawny Poggio had three.

The victory is the sixth in a row for UCR, which is now 10-3-1 overall and a perfect 4-0-0 in the Big West. The loss is UCSB's second in a row and the Gauchos now have an overall record of 7-8-0 and a Big West mark of 1-2-0.

Santa Barbara returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 16, to host Cal State Fullerton in a 1:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium
