SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior forward Kailyn Kugler's successful penalty kick with 52 seconds to play in the second overtime period gave UC Santa Barbara a thrilling 2-1 win over visiting UC Riverside in a Big West soccer match on Sunday evening. The win was the third in a row for the Gauchos, who improve to 6-7-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Kugler's penalty kick came after a scramble in the penalty box following a point-blank shot by sophomore midfielder Erin Ortega. Ortega's shot was blocked, but the referee called a foul in the box, sending Kugler to a penalty kick, which she capitalized on.
Riverside (5-6-3 overall, 0-3-0 BWC) took a 1-0 lead at 35:40 in the first half when Kristina Noreiga blasted-home a shot after a Denise Thomas free kick was punched out by Gaucho goalkeeper Tammy Lenham. Noreiga calmly collected the ball and pushed it past the outstretched arms of Lenham.
It remained 1-0 until the 69th-minute when UCSB knotted the score.
Gaucho forward Kylie McDonald drove down the left side of the box and crossed a pass to Kugler. The junior from San Clemente, Calif., collected the pass and cranked a shot past UCR goalkeeper Jessica White, tying the score at 1-1.
Santa Barbara dominated the play for most of the match. The Gauchos finished with a shot advantage of 29-3, and a shots-on-goal advantage of 10-1. In fact, in the overtime UCSB had an 11-0 shots advantage and a 5-0 shots-on-goal edge.
The penalty kick goal by Kugler was her sixth goal of the season, tops on the team, and she has scored the team's last three goals. Overall, she has four goals in the last three games, all of them game-winners.
The win was the third in a row for the Gauchos, who are tied for first in the Big West with Cal Poly.
