DAVIS, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis played to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon before a record 1,305 fans at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Both teams scored goals in the first 14 minutes before locking down defensively for the remainder of the contest. The match featured a combined 41 shots and 15 saves. The tie was the first of the year for UC Davis (7-2-1) and the fourth for UCSB (2-5-4).
UC Davis wasted little time scoring its goal as Annie McAllister stole a pass from about 20 yards out and fired a shot into an open goal just 100 seconds into the match. The unassisted goal was McAllister's third of the season.
Less than 12 minutes later, the Gauchos responded with a successful corner kick. Sophomore Sami Svrcek fired a low pass from the left corner in front of the goal which in turn was knocked in by senior Darci Gwartz. The goal tied the match at 1-1 in the 14th minute.
From that point, the contest would feature plenty of opportunities for both teams as well as several critical saves by both goalkeepers.
Each team had 12 shots at the end of regulation before the Aggies put constant pressure on the UCSB back four with 10 shots in the extra periods. The teams combined for six shots in the second overtime.
The tie ends UCSB's three-game losing streak. The Gauchos remain winless in their last five (0-3-2) and will open Big West Conference play at home on Friday, Oct. 6 when they host Long Beach State, the preseason favorite to win the regular season title, in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium.
