PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore Carly Dobratz scored a pair of goals to lead Washington State past UC Santa Barbara 3-0 in nonconference women's soccer Friday. The loss ended UCSB's four-match unbeaten streak and two-game winning streak.
The match at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman, Wash., was played under scattered showers with cold and windy conditions. The loss ended the Gauchos' four-match unbeaten streak and their two-game winning streak. UCSB drops to 3-4-2 on the season. With the win No. 18 Washington State improved to 6-1-1, its best start in school history through eight matches.
The contest was a flat-footed tie through the first 60 minutes, but in the 61st minute, the Cougars scored the first of their three goals.
At 60:49, Dobratz's header beat Gaucho goalkeeper Katie Wright just inside the left post after a cross from outside the box by sophomore Maggie Dougher. Just 4:04 later, redshirt-freshman Mallory Fox made a nice move to beat a defender in the middle of the field and feed the ball to Dobratz, who converted inside the box on the right side for her second goal of the match and season.
Fox capped the scoring at 75:19 with her team-leading fourth goal of the season when she found the back of the net from inside the box on the right side. With the three second half tallies, the Cougars have recorded 12 of their 14 goals this season after intermission.
Washington State outshot UCSB 17-7, including a pair of near goals in the first half by sophomore Kiersten Dallstream. In the 33rd minute, Dallstream's shot was deflected by Wright and the ball trickled toward the goal line. It hit the left post before UCSB defender Rachael Ritchey cleared the ball. In the 38th minute, Dallstream beat Wright and fired a shot from the top of the box that hit the cross bar.
WSU goalkeeper Brynn Bemis registered her second straight shutout and 11th of her career.
UCSB will travel to Spokane, Wash., on Sunday for its next contest. The Gauchos will take on the Bulldogs in a match that will begin at noon.
