BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara entered its Thursday night match at Cal State Bakersfield having scored just four goals in six matches in 2007. On Thursday night, the Gauchos tallied two in the first half, another one early in the second half and then coasted to a 3-0 win over the Roadrunners in Bakersfield.
UCSB got on the board first at in the 14th minute as junior forward Michelle Russell punched-home a perfect combo pass from freshman Brooke Salyer and junior midfielder Sami Svrcek. It was the first time the Gauchos had taken the lead in a match since they had a 2-1 edge at Wisconsin on Sept. 7.
The Gauchos claimed a 2-0 lead at the 21:05 mark when senior midfielder Romy Barber scored off of a pass from senior defender Katrina Wright. It was Barber's second goal of the season and the third of her career. As for Wright, it was her team-leading second assist of the season.
Early in the second half, in the 60th minute, UCSB increased its lead to 3-0 as freshman forward-midfielder Kailyn Kugler scored her second goal of the season off of an assist from Russell.
Senior goalkeeper Katie Wright continued her outstanding play in 2007 with her third shutout. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif., needed just one save to secure the win.
The win improves the Gauchos to 2-3-2 on the season, while Cal State Bakersfield drops to 2-5-0. UCSB will return to the pitch on Sunday night, Sept. 23, when it hosts San Diego State in a 6:00 p.m. match.
