SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman forward Genelle Ives scored one goal and assisted on two others during a 19-minute span in the first half on Wednesday night as UC Santa Barbara cruised to its third consecutive win, 3-1 over visiting Hawaii.
Ives assisted on the match's first goal at 14:54 when she hit a cross from the left side of the box and senior forward Darci Gwartz one-timed it past Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper Kori Lu for her first goal of the season.
Gwartz returned the favor less than six minutes later. At 20:29, she dumped a ball into the box and Ives guided a shot past Lu. It was her team-leading third goal of the season and it gave UCSB a 2-0 advantage.
Another freshman, Katie Smith completed the Gaucho scoring at 33:58. Freshman Sami Svrcek hit a cross to Ives on the right-hand side of the box. Ives redirected the ball toward's the goal. A Hawaii defender deflected the shot, but Smith was waiting for the rebound and pounded it home for her second goal of the campaign, giving UCSB a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Rainbow Wahine narrowed the gap to 3-1 at 65:31 when the Gauchos were whistled for tripping a Hawaii attacker in the box. Adria Campbell took the penalty kick and scored her team's only goal of the match.
Santa Barbara outshot Hawaii 15-7, but Lu came-up with seven saves for the visitors. Senior Jamie Considine had three saves for the Gauchos. Also, with her goal and two assists, Ives has now had a hand in seven of UCSB's nine goals this season, scoring three and assisting on four others for 10 points.
The win not only improves UCSB's season-best winning streak to three in a row, but the Gauchos are now 4-3 on the year. Hawaii drops to 2-4-1.
UCSB returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 18, when it hosts George Washington University in a noon game.
