SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Forward Taylor Walsh scored the only goal of the match midway through the first half on Friday night to help visiting Wisconsin spoil UC Santa Barbara's home opener, 1-0.
At 23:20 of the first half, senior midfielder Allison Priess drove down the left side of the penalty box and passed the ball to her right, through heavy traffic. Walsh received the pass, beat a Gaucho defender, and pounded a shot past UCSB goalkeeper Katie Wright. For Walsh, a sophomore, it was her team-leading third goal of the season.
The Gauchos, playing their first home match after opening the 2006 season with four consecutive road games, had 12 shots, four of which were on goal, but they could not get one past Stefan Szczechowski who had four saves. Wisconsin had just nine shots on the night, four on goal. Wright, who had 12 saves in her last game, a 2-0 win over 29th-ranked San Diego State, had three saves against the Badgers.
The loss drops UCSB to 1-2-2 on the season. Wisconsin improves to 2-1-1.
The Gauchos will remain at home for their next two matches. On Sunday, UCSB will host Tulsa in a 1:00 p.m. outing at Harder Stadium.
