COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman midfielder Katie Smith (Yorba Linda, Calif./Mater Dei HS) scored her first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute to give UC Santa Barbara a 1-0 lead en route to a 2-0 victory over Rutgers in the opening game of the Maryland/adidas Classic on Thursday.
Smith scored her goal at 61:06 when she collected a loose ball in the box and cracked a shot past Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Nora Crawford.
UCSB's second goal was also scored by a freshman. Forward Genelle Ives (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills HS) scored off a corner kick from junior forward Allie Kueny in the 70th minute. The goal was the second of the season for Ives, who also tallied one in a season-opening win at Fresno State. In fact, all four UCSB goals this season have been scored by freshmen.
Senior goalkeeper Jamie Considine had three saves in posting the 24th shutout of her career, the second highest total in school history. Also, for the first time this season, the Gauchos outshot their opponent, 11-9.
The win ends a three-game losing streak, all of which were shutouts, and lifts UCSB to 2-3-0 on the season. Rutgers falls to 2-2.
The tournament will take a two-day respite. The Gauchos return to action on Sunday, Sept. 11, when they play Villanova in a 9:00 a.m. (PDT) match.
