MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - On Sunday morning, the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team was blanked 1-0 by Marquette in the final match for both teams at the Minnesota Gold Classic. The loss means that the Gauchos were shutout for the tournament. UCSB lost to Minnesota on Friday, 2-0.
Golden Eagles' forward Meagan Kelly deflected a shot by midfielder Rachel Brown and into the center of the goal at the 72:00 mark to give Marquette (3-2-2) the only goal of the game.
UCSB (3-3-0) was outshot for the match by a margin of 18-8, but both teams had six shots on goal. Two of the Gauchos' six shots on goal came in the final 15 minutes, one each by Alissa Sanchez in the 76th minute and another by Kailyn Kugler in the 86th minute. The shot by Kugler was saved by a defender as it headed into the goal.
For the second straight match, freshman goalkeeper Makenna Henry was solid. On the heels of a season-best six saves on Friday against Minnesota, Henry had five more in the narrow loss to Marquette.
UCSB will remain on the road for games on Sept. 10 at Loyola Marymount and Sept. 12 at UCLA.
