SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara senior goalkeeper Hanna DeWeese was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week after a spectacular performance against No. 2 Stanford on Sunday, the league announced Monday.
Although the Gauchos fell 1-0 to the Cardinal, DeWeese kept them in the match. The contest was scoreless until the 78th minute and that was due in great part to the Carlsbad, Calif., native as she recorded a career-high nine saves. DeWeese's saves included on on a penalty kick and at least five others from point-blank range. She was also incredibly adept at coming off her line to intercept crosses and challenge Stanford players. In all, the visitors from Palo Alto outshot Santa Barbara by a 23-1 tally.
"Hanna was tremendous on Sunday," said UCSB head coach Paul Stumpf. "To put it simply, she kept us in the match against one of the two or three best teams in the country."
In addition to her off-the-charts performance against Stanford, DeWeese recorded three saves in a 1-1 overtime tie with Grand Canyon on Friday night. She finished the week with a 0.90 goals against average and a .846 save percentage.
The Gauchos return to action on Friday, Sept. 20 when they host Fresno State in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium.
