SANTA BARBARA, Calif - Denae Antoine scored a goal in the third minute of the second half and her team added a second tally in the 63rd minute as Cal defeated UC Santa Barbara on Friday night, 2-0.
In a 2018 match, the Gauchos (0-1-2) stunned the Golden Bears, coming back from a 2-0 disadvantage and scoring three goals in the second half and overtime to post a 3-2 win. On Friday night, that was not the case.
At 47:07, Antoine took a deep cross into the six-yard box from Paige Metayer and she headed it past UCSB goalkeeper Hanna DeWeese, giving her team a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Bears' second goal came when Abigail Kim took the ball on the right wing and crossed it, left to right, into Emma Westin who headed it past DeWeese to give her team its 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute.
While DeWeese had five saves, her counterpart, Angelina Anderson, needed only one to blank the Gauchos. Several UCSB players had at least two shots, but , playing her first match of the season, Christine Maurer had a pair and one was on frame.
The Gauchos will travel to Montana and Idaho next weekend. UCSB will play Montana on Friday, Sept. 6 at 4:00 p.m. (PDT) and then Idaho on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 12:30 p.m. (PDT)
