SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team has been picked to finish in second-place in the annual poll of the Big West Conference coaches and senior forward Shaelan Murison has been named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, it was announced Thursday.
The Gauchos, who finished second in the regular season standings in 2018 with an overall record of 13-7-1 and a conference mark of 5-2-1, earned 69 total points and one first-place vote in the poll. Long Beach State, the regular season and Big West Tournament winner in 2018, received five first-place votes and 76 total points. UC Irvine was picked third with two first-place votes and 65 total points. Cal State Fullerton was a distant fourth-place pick with 42 points. CSUN and UC Riverside each garnered 35 points for fifth-place, Hawai'i was seventh with 31 points, UC Davis was eighth with 28 and Cal Poly received one first-place vote and 24 total points for ninth-place.
In 2018, UCSB narrowly missed winning the regular season title, finishing second to Long Beach. In the conference tournament, the Gauchos defeated UC Irvine on the road before falling to the 49ers in the championship match.
Murison was a First Team All-Big West selection and a Second Team All-West Region choice following her breakout junior season in which she tallied 10 goals and four assists for 24 points, all team-leading statistics. She also paced the team in game-winning goals with five, total shots with 100 and shots on goal with 34. Murison started all 21 matches for UCSB in 2018.
"Shae has really grown as a player in her four years," said head coach Paul Stumpf. "She is very deserving of being on the all-league team and I'm happy for her."
The Gaucho women's team will host Westmont College in an exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in Harder Stadium. Season tickets are available by clicking here. The annual showdown between the Westmont men and the UCSB men for the Bryant and Son's Cup will take place 20 minutes following the women's contest.
