SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Hanna DeWeese was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Gauchos to weekend victories over Cal State Fullerton and Hawai'i the league announced Monday. It was her first such honor.
DeWeese, a junior, produced a trio of saves in UCSB's 2-1 win over Fullerton on Oct. 19. She followed that up with another three-save performance and her fourth complete game shutout of the season, a 1-0 decision over UH on Oct. 21.
The Carlsbad, Calif., native has played in the last 12 matches for the Gauchos, starting the last 11. She has won seven times, posted a 0.94 goals against average and a save percentage of .807. DeWeese has been instrumental in helping Santa Barbara climb into third-place in the Big West Conference standings.
With its win over UH on Sunday, UCSB now has an 11-6-0 overall record and a 4-2-0 mark in league play. The 12 points in the standing put the Gauchos in third-place, two points ahead of UC Davis and one behind Long Beach State. UC Irvine leads the standings with 14 points but the Anteaters have played two more matches than the three teams just behind them. The top four teams in the league standings will qualify for next week's Big West Tournament.
Santa Barbara will play its final home game on Thursday, Oct. 25 when it hosts Cal State Northridge in a 7:00 p.m. game at Harder Stadium. Seven Gaucho seniors will be honored prior to kick-off.
