SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team was held without a goal in its exhibition preseason finale against Loyola Marymount University, falling to the Lions by a score of 1-0 on Saturday night at Harder Stadium.
Forward Shannon Kent was the goal-scorer for LMU, landing the game's lone tally in the 23rd minute. Kent's goal was a culmination of a solid period of possession for the Lions. From just outside the final third, LMU forward Callie Taylor lobbed a ball into the penalty area, where it was corraled by Kent. She settled the ball then dribbled to the keeper's left before shooting back across her body for the game-winner.
The Gauchos' play picked up considerably in the second period (the game was played in three 30-minute intervals instead of two 45-minute halves), as they dominated possession early on and eventually outshot the Lions 5-3 in the frame.
Freshman goalkeeper Brittney Rogers played 60 minutes for UCSB and made a pair of saves in each period she played in for a total of four. Freshman midfielder Maddie Gibson paced the Gauchos with two shots, while freshman forward Jessica Parque and freshman midfielder Mallory Hromatko joined her in the shots on goal column with one apiece.
The Gauchos finish the preseason with a 1-1 exhibition record after having downed Westmont 2-0 on Thursday night.
Coach Paul Stumpf's squad will open regular season play this Friday afternoon, Aug. 21, with a 4:00 p.m. showdown at St. Mary's. They finish the weekend with a contest at USF before heading back to Santa Barbara for their home opener against San Jose State on Friday, Aug. 28.
