Gauchos Open Big West Conference Schedule At Home
UCSB host its first two Big West Conference games of the season this weekend and it will be a major challenge.  The Gauchos will open league play on Friday night against UC Irvine and then they will play Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon.  Both the Anteaters and 49ers are among the favorites to win the Big West in 2013 and each has had tremendous success in recent years.  In the annual preseason coaches poll, they were picked to tie for second behind the favorite, Cal State Fullerton.  Long Beach has wins over two ranked teams this season (Texas Tech and BYU), while Irvine has one (BYU).

UCSB Surpasses 2012 Win Total
Santa Barbara enters the Big West season with a 6-4-1 record.  The six wins are one more than the Gauchos had in all of 2012.  They had a five-game winning streak ended on Sept. 22 with a 2-0 loss to 17th-ranked Texas Tech at the Jack in the Box Classic in Albuquerque.  UCSB lost its second straight game on Sept. 29 when it was handed a 2-1 defeat by 19th-ranked Denver.

Home Is Still Pretty Sweet
Despite dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 19 Denver on Sept. 29, UCSB will enter Big West play with a solid 4-1 mark in home games.  The Gauchos won their first four home outings of the season, all by way of shutouts, and they have now outscored their five opponents by an 8-2 margin.

Madison's Avenue Leads To Goals
Alright, that's a bit of a stretch, but what are you gonna do.  Junior Madison Beckley scored the Gauchos' goal in its game against Denver and she has taken over the team-lead on the season with four.  Beckley has played in 10 of the team's 11 games and has a goal or an assist in six of her appearances.  She paces the team with 10 points.  The four goals also ranks the Ohio State transfer in a tie for third in goals in the Big West.  She is all alone in third in total points.

Dromensk's General Assistance
Junior Geneve Dromensk enters league games with a team-leading four assists, a figure that also ranks her in a tie for first in the Big West.  Dromensk has had assists in games against Fresno State, Pacific, Cal State Bakersfield and New Mexico and the Gauchos won all four games.  In addition, she has tallied one goal – vs. Bakersfield – for a total of six points.

Shutout Streak Was Longest In A While
UCSB's streak of five consecutive shutouts (games 5-9) was the third longest in program history and the longest since 1989.  The Gauchos had six-game shutout strings in 1987 and 1989.

Ritter Leads
Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Ritter ranks second in the Big West with a .821 save percentage behind Cal State Fullerton's Lindsey Maricic and is first in the league in goals-against with a 0.61 average.  Ritter has replaced Makenna Henry as the Gauchos starting goalkeeper and Henry is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a variety of injuries.  Ritter has made the most of her opportunity with five wins and five shutouts.  Her streak of five consecutive shutouts was the longest by a UCSB goalkeeper since Jan Urich registered six in a row in 1989.

The Stumpf File
Paul Stumpf is in his 15th season as the head coach of the UCSB women's program.  He is the school's all-time leader in coaching victories with 134.  Overall, Stumpf's career record is 134-122-34.
