BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Paige Gankema's shot bounced over Cal State Bakersfield goalkeeper Tori Ornela for the only score of the night as the Gauchos won for the first time in 2012, 1-0
Gankema's shot was put on the CSUB goal from the top of the 18 yard box. The ball took a huge bounce off the turf in front of the net for the goal. Indiana Mead assisted on the goal at the 11:40 mark in the first half.
The Roadrunners appeared to have tied in the 25th minute when Leilani Skinner headed a ball into the Gauchos' net, but the goal was waived off as the officials ruled that the ball went in off of Skinner's hand. The Roadrunners outshot the Gauchos 14-9, 8-3 in the second half.
Makenna Henry made five saves en route to her second shutout in the last three games.
The crowd of 607 was the largest for a Roadrunner regular season match since the program made the move to Division I.
UCSB returns to action on Friday, Sept. 14 to host the University of San Francisco in a 7:00 p.m. match at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
