Benjamin, Ortega Earn All-Big West Recognition

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior defender Alyssa Benjamin and junior midfielder Erin Ortega were each named Second Team All-Big West selections the league announced this week.

For Benjamin, the honor is her first as a Gaucho.   A native of Petaluma, she played in and started 18 matches.  As the season wound to a close, Benjamin was shifted from the back line to the forward line as UCSB searched for some scoring punch and she responded, scoring two of her three career goals in the final two weekends of the season.
Ortega, who earned Honorable Mention All-Big West recognition as a freshman in 2009, was among the Gauchos' leaders in scoring.  In fact, her three goals tied for second on the team.  A native of Santa Clarita, Ortega also assisted on a pair of scores and totaled eight points.  She was also one of just three players on the roster to start all 20 games for UCSB.
