SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara senior center Jenna Green will redshirt the rest of the 2007-08 season, head coach Mark French announced Thursday. Green has missed five games with back spasms and will not return for the Gauchos this year.
"Our program focuses on what's best for the individual athlete and it is definitely in Jenna's best interests to rest her back at this time," French said. "We obviously wish her the best and look forward to the possibility of Jenna returning next season."
Green, who was granted a medical redshirt after tearing the medial collateral ligament in her left knee early in the 2004-05 season, will apply for a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA after the season in hopes of returning for 2008-09.
The San Jose, Calif. native earned All-Big West First Team honors for the second consecutive season in 2006-07 after leading UCSB averaging 16.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. The only player to start all 33 contests a year ago, Green led the team in scoring 19 times during the season, including both contests in the Big West Tournament and Santa Barbara's match-ups with the University of San Diego and Oregon in the WNIT. She scored in double figures 29 times and scored 20 or more on 11 occasions, including the final three games of the year. Green also led the squad in blocked shots (1.7 bpg), field goals made (218), field goal percentage (.537), and free-throws made (113) last season.
The 6-foot-4 center leads Santa Barbara averaging 11.5 points and is second hauling in 4.5 rebounds in four games this season. UCSB is 2-3 without Green in 2007-08.
After defeating Pepperdine 65-63 on December 17, the Gauchos will return to the court after Christmas with the Lady Griz Holiday Classic in Missoula, Mont. UCSB will take on host Montana Friday, December 28 and then wrap up the two-day tournament against Mississippi on Saturday.
