SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Due to her participation in an informal scrimmage last month, UC Santa Barbara women's basketball sophomore guard Jessica Wilson must sit out the Gauchos' regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 18 at Michigan State.
Wilson played in Santa Barbara's Oct. 29 scrimmage against Westmont College before her athletic eligibility had been certified by UCSB administrators. As a result of this infraction the NCAA has imposed a one-game penalty. Wilson - a native of Sacramento, Calif. - will be eligible to play at Louisville on Sunday, Nov. 20, the second stop on the Gauchos' two-game season-opening road trip.
The scrimmage vs. Westmont counts towards the NCAA's two-game preseason limit, meaning UCSB was forced to cancel its Nov. 11 exhibition contest against Cal Poly Pomona in the Thunderdome.
"As disappointed as I am that my scheduling oversight will result in our fans missing an opportunity to watch the Gauchos play on Nov. 11, I'm even more disappointed that Jessica's eligibility has been affected."
