November 11 UCSB Women's Basketball Exhibition Game vs. Cal Poly Pomona Cancelled Due to Overscheduling

Nov. 3, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Due to an overscheduling of permissible preseason competition, the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team must cancel its Friday, Nov. 11 exhibition game against Cal Poly Pomona, head coach Mark French announced Thursday.

NCAA Division I women's basketball programs are allowed two dates of exhibition competition, either against non-Division I schools, foreign teams or traveling professional squads. UCSB took part in an unscheduled Oct. 29 scrimmage against Westmont College, which is considered one of those competition days. 2005-06 is the first season in which scrimmages between schools are permitted by the NCAA, and as a result the Santa Barbara coaching staff was not aware that the Gauchos' meeting with Westmont would push them over the allocated limit.

"I take full responsibility for not having a comprehensive understanding of the NCAA bylaws regarding exhibition competition," French stated. "I want to sincerely apologize to our devoted Gaucho fans, both for any confusion this cancellation may cause, as well as for denying them the opportunity to watch our women in action on Nov. 11."

UCSB women's basketball season ticket holders will receive a voucher in the mail redeemable for tickets to a regular season Gaucho men's or women's home game of their choice. Seats will be in the best available location. Meanwhile, Santa Barbara has rescheduled its contest with Cal Poly Pomona for the 2006-07 exhibition season.

The Gauchos will still play their Sunday, Nov. 6 exhibition game against Cal State Bakersfield, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Thunderdome. All fans who fill out a voucher available at www.ucsbgauchos.com or outside the arena on Sunday will receive free admission. In addition, the Gauchos are holding a postgame autograph session where 1,500 complementary team posters will be handed out.
