SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UCSB Athletics is pleased to announce that on Tuesday, Nov. 10 numerous women from Santa Barbara and the surrounding communities are invited to learn more about the HER Time! initiative.
HER Time! is an initiative under UCSB's "Dare to be Great" campaign, which is designed to to improve facilities and increase scholarship opportunities for Gaucho female student-athletes. HER Time! also goes on to say "Along with funding, we also want to connect the strong leaders in the community with our approximately 225 female student-athletes to provide mentoring, leadership, and personal growth. These experiences will pay dividends in the form of stronger, healthier, and more confident women."
That is what the Nov. 10 gathering will be about. It will be a way to bring strong female leaders from the community to connect with the UCSB women's basketball team and also help serve as role models to the female UCSB student-athletes. In turn, UCSB student athletes, with leaders from the community will team up to make a difference in the lives of young women in the Santa Barbara community, using UCSB women's basketball as the vehicle.
Featured speakers at the event will be Director of Athletics Mark Massari, Executive Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator, Diane O'Brien, and UCSB women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb.
"I'm truly thrilled to be a part of the HER Time! kickoff event on Nov. 10," Gottlieb said. "As the head coach of Gaucho women's basketball, I get to see the effort, commitment and strength put forth by my players on and off the court everyday. However, one of the best parts of my job is the knowledge that, through the platform of athletics, we can actually have a positive impact on girls and women as a whole and throughout the greater community.
"With the support of Mark Massari, Diane O'Brien and the entire athletic administration, we aim to use the NCAA grant, in part, to connect strong women with strong women to benefit the girls in our community. This event promises to be fun and inspiring. If together we can use Gaucho women's basketball as a vehicle to empower even one young girl to pursue her goals, then the benefits will outweigh even championships won on the court."
Part of the grant - awarded to UCSB increase awareness, exposure and increase attendance of women's basketball - will be used for the HER Time! event. To read about the grant, given to UCSB as one of only 18 institutions nationwide, click here.
