Sha'Rae Gibbons Takes Leave of Absence from UCSB

Sept. 28, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sha'Rae Gibbons, a sophomore guard on the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team, will take an indefinite leave of absence from the Gauchos due to personal reasons, head coach Mark French announced Wednesday.

Gibbons, a native of Sacramento, Calif., has withdrawn from school and will not compete during the upcoming 2005-06 season. The opportunity for her to return to the UCSB program has been extended, provided she maintains her academic eligibility.

"Our Gaucho family feels Sha'Rae has made the right decision to spend some time away from UCSB, and we stand behind her 100 percent," French stated. "We look forward to Sha'Rae returning to school - and our team - at some point in the future."

Gibbons appeared in 27 games as a true freshman in 2004-05, the most by any of Santa Barbara's five rookies last season. She averaged 1.5 points and 1.0 rebounds in 10.6 minutes per contest a year ago, with her career high of eight points coming at UC Irvine on Dec. 30.

With Gibbons' departure the Gauchos currently field an 11-player active roster for the upcoming season. UCSB's coaching staff is exploring the option of adding walk-on players in 2005-06.
