Senior Ariana Gnekow has been named the UCSBgauchos.com/Golden 1 Credit Union Athlete of the Week for her performances that helped the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team to two victories last week as part of the team's current five-game winning streak.
On Wednesday at UC Irvine, Gnekow tied her career-high with 12 points, 11 of them coming in the first half, as UCSB narrowly held on for a 57-55 victory. Gnekow, who hails from Santa Ynez, Calif., pulled down five rebounds while handing out an assist and nabbing a steal in the game.
However, the starting guard saved her best performance in a UCSB uniform for her final regular-season game. On Saturday at Cal State Bakersfield, Gnekow had her first career double-double by scoring a new career-high 13 points and pulling in a personal best 13 rebounds. She was one of two Gauchos with a double-double in the 80-75 victory as she also had two assists, a steal and was 6 of 9 from the field.
For the week Gnekow shot 10-for-15 from the field, including 2 of 3 from downtown.
Gnekow has become a fixture in the Gauchos' starting lineup in the team's past 12 games and she has been a big reason UCSB has won eight of those contests. She was awarded with the Big West Hustle Award on Monday, a first for the program.
Gnekow and the Gauchos take on Pacific in the opening round of the Big West Tournament on Wednesday at noon.
