• No In-N-Out Needed for This Double-Double
Junior center Mekia Valentine notched her eighth double-double of the season on Saturday and her fourth in the past five games. Valentine's eight double-doubles this season rank second in the Big West and are the most by a Gaucho since Kristen Mann tallied 14 double-doubles in the 2004-05 season.

• For the Record
UCSB's 8-16 record marks the most defeats by a Gaucho team since the 1988-89 season when Santa Barbara went 9-19. At 5-7 in the Big West, the Gauchos have dropped their most games since losing seven conference games in the 1993-94 season. In the 1990-91 campaign, UCSB dropped eight Big West games.

• Valentine's Block Party
With an average of 3.7 blocked shots per game, Mekia Valentine ranks third in the nation. Her total of 85 blocks already ranks her 10th all-time in school history for career blocked shots, trailing Kristi Rohr (1996-2000) by two for ninth place. Valentine's 85 swats are a single-season UCSB record.

• Swat Team
The Gauchos have blocked a school-record 144 shots this season (besting the previous record of 140 set in 2003-04) and their 6.0 blocks per game rank seventh overall in the nation.

The Opponents

• vs. Cal State Fullerton, 2/20
The Gauchos hold one of the nation's longest winning streaks over the Titans, having beaten CSUF 34 straight times dating to the 1995 season. It took double overtime in the teams Jan. 23 match-up for UCSB to continue its winning streak. Emilie Johnson's game-winning shot in the second overtime followed a game-tying shot in regulation by Jordan Franey and one in the first overtime from Mekia Valentine. Fullerton is 6-6 in the Big West after falling to Cal State Northridge last Saturday. The Titans, who defeated Bakersfield on Wed., 78-61, are led by Megan Richardson's 14.8 points per game (3rd in the Big West).

• at Cal State Northridge, 2/24
UCSB has defeated Northridge six straight times and 10 consecutive times at CSUN's Matadome, the site of next week's game. The last Gaucho loss in Northridge came on Dec. 1, 1984. In the Jan. 30 game this year between the teams, UCSB defeated CSUN, 69-55, which is the Gauchos' third largest win this season. The Matadors are led by Jasmine Erving's 12.8 points per game (8th in the Big West) though she tallied just four points vs. UCSB in the team's previous meeting. Bridgette Conejo averages 12.4 points per game (10th in the Big West).

• Big West Woes
UCSB is two games under .500 in conference play for the first time since holding a 6-9 mark in February, 1990. That was the last Gaucho team to finish the conference season with a sub-.500 record.

• Third Time, No Charm
UCSB has dropped three straight Big West games for the first time since 1993-94.

• Mekia the Marksman
Valentine's 59.4% field goal clip leads the Big West and ranks the junior 10th in the nation. The Greensboro, N.C. native is on pace to challenge the school's single-season record. The current top spot is occupied by Kira Anthofer, who shot 59.6% from the field in 1985-86. Valentine is hitting 61.2% of her shots in conference action.

• Leading Lady
Sophomore point guard Emilie Johnson leads the Gauchos with her 12.9 points per game average while also pacing the team in assists (77; 3.2 per game) and steals (42; 1.8 per game). Johnson would be the second player in as many years to lead the Gauchos in those categories after Lauren Pedersen did so last year. Pedersen, however, was the first UCSB player to accomplish the feat since Iesha Smith in 1993-94.

Probable Starters

14 Jordan Franey F Hasn't scored double digits in past 8 games
21 Meagan Williams G 10.6 ppg and 4.0 rpg are career-bests
44 Mekia Valentine C Has posted 8 double-doubles this year

Possible Reserves

0 Bree Richardson G Remains out with foot stress fracture
1 Sweets Underwood F Tied career-high with 7 rebounds @ LB
3 Megan Kritscher F/C Avg. 1.4 ppg, 1.7 rpg this season
11 Stefanie Corgel G Played career-high 15 minutes on 2/4
22 Chris Spencer G Team-high 44.8% from downtown
25 Jessie Goble F/C Missed last nine games with back injury
32 Margaret Johnson F Has played once in past six games

• Three-licious
Johnson has attempted a Big West high 150 three-pointers, ranking her sixth all-time in single-season history (Erin Alexander's 227 in 1995-96 ranks first). Johnson is making 1.88 per game, which is second in the conference. Johnson has already attempted 256 treys in her short UCSB career, ranking her ninth all-time in UCSB history, just two behind Jessica Wilson (2004-08). Alexander holds the school record with 609 attempts in her career, spanning 1993-96.

• Three-Co-La
Following a four-game stretch that saw the Gauchos fill it up from downtown (going 22 of 48, 45.8%) UCSB has gone just 3-for-28 in their past two games. UCSB has had 13 halves of basketball this season (including one each of the past two games) where it failed to hit a trey. As a team, the Gauchos are shooting just 26.1% from downtown, or currently the lowest in school history since the NCAA introduced the bonus bomb in the 1987-88 season (see chart, below).

Lowest 3-Point Pct. by Year
Year Total

1. 2009-10 26.1
2. 2005-06 26.2
3. 1993-94 26.8
4. 1987-88 27.8
5. 1990-91 28.0
6. 1988-89 28.1
7. 2007-08 30.4
8. 1989-90 31.1
9. 2008-09 32.2
10. 1991-92 33.0

• We're a Boarding School
With a +5.0 rebound margin, UCSB leads the Big West (Cal Poly's +4.2 is the only other school with a positive rebounding differential) and it's an even better +8.2 differential in conference play. UCSB has equaled or outrebounded its opponent in 17 of the team's 24 games and brings in an average of 39.6 boards per contest.

• Tenacious D
Following up last season's 34.4% that UCSB allowed opponents to shoot - which was best in the conference - this year's team is holding opponents to a 37.1% clip, which is also the lowest mark in the Big West. The Gauchos allow opponents an average of just 61.5 points per game, which is second-best in the conference, and would rank seventh all-time in school history.

• No Apples in This Turnover
UCSB has turned the ball over an average of 21.5 times per game, second-most in the conference (behind Cal State Northridge's 21.6 per game). The Gauchos' -5.29 turnover margin per game is 319th nationally (out of 332 teams). UCSB is on pace to commit 624 turnovers this season, which would rank ninth all-time in program single-season history.

• Nothing Free About Them
Last season UCSB set a school record by shooting 75.7% from the free throw line. The Gauchos' current 63.3% from the charity stripe is eighth in the nine-team Big West and would count as the team's lowest free throw percentage since the team shot 61.1% from the stripe in the 1989-90 season.

• Sabado Gigante
We know the band Chicago loved Saturdays (in the park) and so do the Gauchos. UCSB is 5-3 on Saturdays (its best mark on any day of the week) this season after going 9-2 on Saturdays last season.

• The Lindsay Gottlieb File
Lindsay Gottlieb is in her second season as the Gauchos' head coach, and she is just the fourth head coach in UCSB women's basketball history. Last season Gottlieb guided the Gauchos to a 22-10 overall mark (15-1 in the Big West) and the Big West regular-season and tournament championships. Named the Big West Coach of the Year, Gottlieb became the first coach in Gaucho history to win at least 20 games and the Coach of the Year award in her first season - and one of only seven coaches nationwide to do so. Gottlieb led the Gauchos to their 14th consecutive postseason appearance and the team won 20 games for the 12th time in the past 14 years. In her first season at the helm of the program, Gottlieb guided the Gauchos to national prominence, ranking in the top-10 in field goal percentage defense, a top-20 finish in points allowed per game while watching her team set a school record for free throw percentage. No stranger to success, Gottlieb was formerly the associate head coach at Cal, helping the team to a 68-28 (.708) overall mark in her time there. Prior to that, Gottlieb was an assistant at the University of Richmond, where she helped the Spiders to three straight 20-win seasons.
