On Monday the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team held a free basketball clinic at the YMCA to teach area youths some fundamentals of the game. The free basketball clinic is part of the "Gauchos Give" community outreach initiative.
The coaching staff was there to teach kids, ranging from first through sixth grades, the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting and playing defense.
Several of the Gauchos players were in attendance to pass on their skills to the kids who have aspirations of one day donning the blue and gold. In all, over 250 kids showed up for the clinic.
"My staff, players and I had an amazing time working with the youngsters at the Santa Barbara YMCA," head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "In the clinic, we put them through a series of drills covering ballhandling, shooting and defense. "I hope that in addition to providing them with some basketball skills, we also showed them that being a great Gaucho is more than just what you do on the court. It's about being a diligent student, a hard-working athlete, and a role model in the community. Our student-athletes were so interactive with the kids, and I know that everyone had a lot of fun."
The event helps the YMCA kick off its annual winter league and provides an opportunity for the Gauchos to get out in the community and interact with the youths, helping them learn more about basketball.
Helping the coaching staff out were players Ashlee Brown, Emilie Johnson, Jessie Goble, Meagan Williams, Sha'Rae Gibbons, Courtney Collishaw, Whitney Warren, Margaret Johnson, Ariana Gnekow and Megan Kritscher.
The Gauchos will take their five-game winning streak into Wednesday night's non-conference game vs. Portland State at the Thunderdome at 7 p.m. UCSB will then pick up Big West Conference play on Saturday afternoon vs. Cal Poly at 2 p.m.
Saturday's game is a Coke Family Pack event where $40 gets you four tickets, four hot dogs, four T-shirts and four sodas.
Tickets are available by calling (805) 893-UCSB, coming to the Ticket Office in the Intercollegiate Athletics building on campus or by clicking here.
