IRVINE, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior guard Jessica Wilson was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for the week ending January 7, it was announced today. Wilson earned her second-career award after averaging 14 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists in two games last week, leading the Gauchos to victories over Long Beach State and UC Irvine.
The Sacramento, Calif. native scored 13 points on 3-for-9 shooting - including a 3-for-5 performance from beyond the three-point arc - to go along with eight rebounds, six assists, and a blocked shot in UCSB's 71-60 home win over the 49ers Thursday. She was even better in Saturday's 86-67 victory against the Anteaters in the Thunderdome, making six of 12 shots for 15 points. She also recorded six rebounds, 12 assists, three blocks and four steals.
The 12 assists was a career-high, eclipsing her previous best of seven that came in the Gauchos' 87-62 loss at UCLA earlier this season. The total was also the league's top single-game performance of the season.
Wilson, who has scored in double-figures in five consecutive games, led Santa Barbara to its season-high third straight win with the victory over UCI. This is the first accolade of the season for UCSB.
The Gauchos own an overall record of 7-8 and a 3-1 mark in Big West play, which ties UC Riverside for the conference's top spot. The defending co-champions return to the court for two non-conference match-ups this week with Utah Valley State on the schedule Thursday, January 11 in the Thunderdome, before they head to UC Davis Saturday, January 13. Both games tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
